BlackBerry Continues Dominance Across U.S., According to BoomBox, Myxer’s Monthly Report on Mobile Entertainment Trends

Miami, FL (PRWEB) April 7, 2010

While iPhone and Android are quick to grab much of the headlines these days, RIM has shown impressive results and rapid growth, according to Myxer’s latest report, BoomBox. For this month’s report, Myxer takes a hard look at year–over-year growth across smartphone platforms, and provides a breakdown of RIM data as it compares to the overall Myxer audience of more than 33 million users.

According to the study, RIM continues to far outpace Windows, Palm, webOS, Android, iPhone and Symbian based on mobile visits, growing from a 58% market share in March 2009 to a 63% share in March 2010. Of the other operating systems, Android comes in second, more than doubling over the same time period from 7% to 17%, while iPhone makes a modest jump to 4%, up from 2% from the previous year. Symbian and webOS occupy the smallest percentage of market share with less than 2% combined, while Windows Mobile was the biggest loser moving from 21% in 2009 down to 10% in 2010.

Interestingly, the same holds true when comparing total downloads for the month of March 2010, where BlackBerry accounted for a whopping 72% of the 22 million smartphone content downloads, followed by Android at 14% and Windows Mobile at 7%. The others did not fare as well, with iPhone only grabbing a 2% share, Symbian a 3% share and webOS and Palm only representing 1% of smartphone downloads.

RIM vs. iPhone & Android: Regional Breakdown

Looking at the regional breakdowns of the most popular smartphone operating systems, RIM also emerges as the clear leader. Across all U.S. states RIM is dominant in 44 of them, even when you combine Android and iPhone users for each state. BlackBerry only loses to the iPhone and Android in Alaska, Hawaii, Kentucky, and Louisiana, with Nevada and Texas representative of ‘swing states’, or less than a 10% differential in users.

RIM Handset Breakdown by Downloads and Gender

In terms of BlackBerry downloads on Myxer, the BlackBerry Curve 8330 was the most widely used by far, accounting for roughly 4.8 million of the total 22 million of the smartphone downloads for March 2010. The Blackberry Curve 8320 represented the lowest number of downloads with only 384,190.

As broken down by gender, women were surprisingly dominant across all BlackBerry devices, with the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 having the largest concentration of female users at 70%, and the BlackBerry Storm 9530 having the highest concentration of male users at 46%.

“With BlackBerry users downloading 16 million pieces of mobile content a month and growing, Myxer represents one of the largest communities of RIM users in the world,” said Myk Willis, CEO of Myxer. “Despite what you may hear or read about in the press, RIM’s audience still dominates across the U.S., and far surpasses iPhone and Android in a number of important categories. We continue to be very impressed by RIM’s growth, and remain confident that it will continue to be a preferred platform of choice by a wide cross section of mobile content consumers.”

Since 2005 Myxer has cataloged various data points: age, gender, geographic location, phone model, manufacturer, carrier, as well as the operating system of each handset that initiated a download from its delivery platform that now supports more than seven million monthly unique visitors downloading over 90 million content items from Myxer each month.

The NPD Group: Amazon Ties Walmart as Second-Ranked U.S. Music Retailer, Behind Industry-Leader iTunes

Port Washington, New York (Vocus) May 27, 2010

According to The NPD Group, a leading market research company, Apple’s iTunes store continued to lead all music retailers, with 28 percent of all music purchased by U.S. consumers — a gain of 4 percentage points since Q1 2009. Amazon gained three percentage points to tie Walmart for second position at 12 percent. Based on NPD’s latest music industry research, sales of digital tracks and albums accounted for 40 percent of overall music market share in the first quarter (Q1) of 2010, which is a 5 percentage point gain since Q1 2009. NPD’s data is based on a combined music-retailer ranking that reflects the combined sales of CDs and digital music downloads (i.e., 12 digital music track downloads are equivalent to one CD).

“Amazon’s growth reflects a stronger position in both the CD and digital formats,” said Russ Crupnick, vice president of industry analysis for the NPD group. “This dual-pronged approach of selling both digital music and CDs helps attract the most valuable and committed music buyer who prefers access to both formats.”

When reviewing sales of digital music separately from CDs, NPD’s MusicWatch data revealed that iTunes’s share of the digital-music download retail market has remained essentially flat since Q1 2009 — growing just one percentage point to reach 70 percent of the digital music market last quarter. At the same time, AmazonMP3 grew by 4 percentage points to reach 12 percent, while Amazon’s share of the CD market grew by 2 percentage points to reach 11 percent.

In NPD’s review of CD retailers, Walmart led U.S. CD purchases in Q1 2010 with 17 percent share of retail market. Best Buy followed Walmart with 14 percent, while Amazon’s 11 percent share positioned them in third place.

“Unfortunately the decline in U.S. CD sales means that selection and merchandising of the physical CDs is suffering, which is one of the primary reasons consumers say they purchased CDs less frequently,” said Crupnick. “Online shopping offers consumers who still want CDs more variety than they would get in a brick-and-mortar store; plus, recommendations, and other interactive features that raise the overall value proposition for music buyers.”

Data note: The information in this press release is from NPD’s consumer tracking of U.S. consumers, age 13 and older, who reported their purchases of physical product (CDs), digital music, and wireless over-the-air (OTA) transactions — excluding ringtones. NPD’s combined music retailer ranking reflects combined sales of CDs and digital music downloads, where 12 digital music tracks are equivalent to one CD.

The NPD Group: Motorola, HTC Drive Android to Smartphone OS Lead in the U.S.

Port Washington, NY (Vocus) August 4, 2010

Riding the wave of new handset introductions and wide carrier distribution in the second quarter (Q2), the Android smartphone operating system (OS) continued its upward climb in the U.S. consumer mobile phone market, according to The NPD Group, a leading market research company. For the first time since the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2007, RIM fell to second position, as Android took the lead among operating systems in handsets sold to U.S. consumers. NPD’s latest wireless market research reveals that Android accounted for 33 percent of all smartphones purchased in Q2, ahead of RIM (28 percent) and Apple (22 percent).

“For the second consecutive quarter, Android handsets have shown strong but slowing sell-through market share gains among U.S. consumers,” said Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD. “While the Google-developed OS took market share from RIM, Apple’s iOS saw a small gain this quarter on the strength of the iPhone 4 launch.”

Based on U.S. consumer purchases of mobile phones in Q2, the top 5 Android smartphones were as follows:

1. Motorola Droid

2. HTC Droid Incredible

3. HTC EVO 4G

4. HTC Hero

5. HTC Droid Eris

“Blackberry 6 will soon offer features that have been popular in recently launched Android handsets, such as support for capacitive touchscreens and a WebKit-based browser. However, the Blackberry Torch lacks the large screen allure that has characterized the best selling Android devices at its price point, including the Droid Incredible and EVO 4G,” Rubin said.

Model selection and promotions continue to play a role in the race for carrier dominance. According to NPD’s Mobile Phone Track, Verizon Wireless has maintained its lead among top carriers for the last three quarters comprising a third (33 percent) of the units sold in the U.S. mobile phone market in Q2, followed by AT&T (25 percent), Sprint (12 percent), and T-Mobile (11 percent). In Q2 Verizon Wireless continued their buy-one-get-one (BOGO) offers on all smartphones, including both RIM and Android models.

In spite of an overall decline in the number of mobile phones purchased year over year, the ongoing popularity of both messaging phones and smartphones, which are generally more costly than standard feature phones, resulted in slightly higher prices for all mobile phones in Q2. The average selling price for all mobile phones reached $ 90, which is a 3 percent increase since Q2 last year. Smartphone unit prices, by comparison, averaged $ 143 in Q2 2010, which is a 9 percent decrease over the previous year.

Data Note: The information in this press release is from Mobile Phone Track — NPD’s consumer tracking of U.S. consumers, aged 18 and older, who reported purchasing a mobile phone. NPD does not track corporate/enterprise mobile phone purchases.

2010 “Biggest Quits” List Names Top 10 Resignations in the U.S.

New York, NY (PRWEB) January 6, 2011

Retensa, a leader in Talent Management Strategies and Research, publishes its sixth annual “Biggest Quits” list. 2010 was a year of economic recovery and social change. Disgruntled workers are ready to jump ship at a record pace and in dramatic ways. A staggering 84% of people already employed plan to look for a new position in 2011. Up from 60% last year and the highest percentage ever recorded. If only one-fourth of them take action, it will be higher than any voluntary turnover rate in history.

Each year, Retensa compiles a list of the top ten most noteworthy resignations across all US industries, sports, and government. Fewer resignations at the top of the helm took place this year, but those who did made a statement. Who would think that Steven Slater, a flight attendant from JetBlue, would make the same list as Simon Cowell, acerbic judge on American Idol? What does the Chief of Staff of the White House have to do with the NBA’s Most Valuable Player? Ever wonder what happened to MySpace and what they have in common with the DC Chancellor of Schools?

In 2010, Americans demanded transparency and stronger leadership. The inevitable growth of social media pushed organizations to increase tweets, likes, fan bases, and network connections, which accelerated the already always-on news cycle. HR departments stressed over social media policies and disciplinary measures. Lower tolerance of smoke screens and demand for transparency sprung WikiLeaks into the conversation. Could our dig out of the recession also be the start of a cultural revolution? What happens when leadership changes don’t work out for the best? Find out whose resignations made an impact big enough to create change in 2010. The answers can be found in the sixth annual publication of Retensa’s Top 10 “Biggest Quits”.

About the “Biggest Quits” List

Only U.S.-based departures qualify for inclusion on Retensa’s annual “Biggest Quits” List. To make the top 10, Retensa applies three criteria: (1) the magnitude of impact in the individual’s industry or field, (2) the financial loss or loss of influence of the enduring organization, and (3) the degree that the enduring organization is unprepared to respond. View and post your comments on this year’s list at: http://www.biggestquits.com.

About Retensa

Retensa addresses the social and economic impact of employee turnover for public, private, and non-profit organizations. They combine experience and web-based technology to develop, motivate, and retain a company’s best employees. To create the “Retention Environment,” Retensa provides expertise in HR Metrics, Mentoring, On-line Employee Surveys, On-line Exit Interviews, Executive Coaching, Succession Planning and talent management solutions.
