With the launch of iTunes turning the music industry on its head, the online music retailer already faces a new brand of competition ÂÂ the digital savvy musician. UK chillout band, The Urban Myth Club, has had 5,000 tracks from its latest release, The Secret EP, downloaded directly from its website, www.urbanmythclub.com, while waiting to place its tracks on iTunes.
The Urban Myth Club hit the radars of music fans when illegal pre-release copies of its material started circulating around the web. When the band released the limited edition CD, The Secret EP, it sold out in two days, so it was vital to find a new way to meet demand.
Mark Vox, a spokesperson for The Urban Myth Club, comments: ÂÂThe guys got frustrated waiting for iTunes to respond. Inviting fans to download the EP directly from the bandÂÂs website hadnÂÂt even been considered, until someone said they could set up a retail system in a few hours. Almost immediately, tracks were selling well online, and cutting out the middleman.ÂÂ
With the hype and excitement surrounding iTunes, new artists believe they can now reach a global market overnight and sell thousands of records. Mark Vox disagrees: ÂÂMany artists currently think their records will turn platinum by just getting their tracks on iTunes and similar sites. ItÂÂs a false dream. The reality is that your music competes with 700,000 tracks, far more than stocked in your local record store. iTunes has revolutionised the distribution of music, not the promotion of new music. ItÂÂs great if youÂÂre signed to a major with marketing millions, but for everyone else, the playing field has suddenly become a lot more crowded.”
The Urban Myth Club is being hailed as the UKÂÂs answer to Air and Royksopp, with a growing fan base across Europe and North America. The band has gained a cult status, as fans try to find out who is behind the group. ItÂÂs known that the collaboration of established artists include a Hollywood film composer and one of the industryÂÂs most respected chill-out names who recently appeared at Glastonbury.

Voalté®, the leader in Point-of-Care communication technology, today announced its Voalté One solution will be available on the Apple iPad platform. The application brings cutting edge communication technology to nurses and other point-of-care workers.
Voalté (nomenclature derived from Voice, Alarm, Text) currently consolidates all three functions on the versatile iPhone platform. The first-of-its-kind application enables users to send and receive text messages, make voice calls, and receive critical care alarms on the iPhone, providing faster response times to patient needs.
“We feel the iPad will be a great tool for healthcare clinicians,” said Trey Lauderdale, vice president of innovation for Voalté. “While this is not necessarily a nurse’s only device, the increased screen size will be beneficial for physicians and other clinicians who want to connect with the EMR, view medical images, make diagnosis and educate the patient.”
The iPad and the iPhone provide an outstanding family of mobile computing platforms for healthcare. Nurses have embraced the iPhone due to its flexibility, pocket-sized form factor and the breadth of healthcare applications available on the App Store. Now, applications that require a larger screen and a full keyboard will have a home and because the iPad is compatible with the iPhone, users will be able to leverage the vast library of iPhone applications and their investment in infrastructure.
Voalté, along with other innovative software companies, have led the way into deploying highly mobile solutions to point-of-care workers in healthcare. The iPad provides an entirely new opportunity for extending the caregiver and the patient experience.
Voalté will offer the iPad Development Partner program to its existing client hospitals and a few additional hospitals interested in exploring the use of the iPad in healthcare. The Voalté One Application is expected to be available for the iPad by Apple’s shipment date in late March.
