Question by di0rb0i: What is Windows 7 “Starter”?
I noticed that netbooks have “Windows 7 Starter” but I have no idea what this is!

It’s a gimped version of Windows 7 Home.

You can’t change the background amongst other things. Basically, it’s a bare bones version of Windows 7 designed to work within the relatively limited resources of a netbook. Not all netbooks come with starter.

Question by : Will upgrading windows 7 “starter” to “ultimate”, erase my files?
I bought a new “acer aspire netbook”, with a 1GB RAM, 1.66hz and 160GB HDD hard drive!!!
When i bought it, this week, it had windows 7 starter, which looks awfully like windows vista, but i want to upgrade it to windows 7 ultimate!!!
Will it upgrade without erasing my files on my PC???

if you do a update it shouldn’t if you have to do a fresh install it will. I no you can upgrade vista to 7 w/o losing files not sure about 7 to 7.

Question by : Does Windows 7 starter have windows xx compatibility mode?
I’m planning to buy a netbook (usually has a win7 starter preinstalled within)

I want to play old games like RA2- Yuri’s R , SC2, B. Realms etc.. and I heard that win 7 starter has no “Windows Xp mode”.

I’ve done a trick on my win XP desktop PC before to enable the system to run those programs compatible of older window versions. – (right click exe file>properties>under compatibility tab> set to: win98/me compatible)

I just want to ask if I can do the “compatibility trick” on win7 STARTER again just like what I did on xp before?

if not, Are there alternative ways to play those old games under win7starter ?

What is the difference between “windows xp mode” and “windows xx compatibility mode” ?

Thanks in advance

XP mode is a virutal PC session within Windows 7 where the software is actually running in XP. Compatibility mode is where the OS “lies” to the application to make it think it is running in XP.

All versions have the compatibility mode. Only Professional and above have XP mode.

Question by I Like C: What are some starter jobs for someone with a computer security degree and very little (no) experience?
My boyfriend will be a May 2009 graduate with a degree in computer security. He has no work experience (other than bussing tables). Any ideas of good degree-related jobs he could start with?
