SANTA CLARA, California – April, 2003 – Kerio Technologies, a software developer specializing in security solutions for small to mid-sized businesses, has launched the new version of its multi-platform corporate messaging solution, Kerio MailServer 5.6 with significantly augmented anti-spam protection. Existing anti-spam tools have been enriched by award-winning spam detection technology called SpamAssassin. SpamAssassin analyzes each email message against multiple criteria and gives it a numerical rating. If the message rating exceeds the threshold set by the user, the message is marked as spam and filtered according to the user’s wishes.

According to a recent Ferris Research study, the average corporate user receives three spam messages per day and the prediction is that the number will only increase.

SpamAssassin is an open source project aimed at developing technology for recognizing spam messages. It uses different tactics such as header analysis, content analysis, blacklist checking, and collaborative spam-tracking database checking. In a recent PC Magazine test, SpamAssassin filtered out 88.9% of spam with a false positive rate of only 4.3 percent, earning it the Editor’s Choice award.

“SpamAssassin is a powerful addition to our existing anti-spam measures,” says Dusan Vitek, director of marketing for Kerio Technologies. “We feel that this level of protection should be a part of any viable corporate messaging solution, which is why we are adding SpamAssassin, together with protection against directory harvest attacks, at no additional cost to Kerio MailServer customers.”

Directory harvest attacks abuse the design of the SMTP protocol. When one mail server attempts to deliver a message to another mail server, it first inquires whether the recipient address exists on the target mail server. If it exists, the target mail server sends a confirmation; if not, the server responds with negative answer. Spammers take advantage of this communication by submitting multiple requests with different combinations of first and last names. By harvesting valid responses, spammers get very precise list of valid email addresses suitable for future spamming.

To fight directory harvest attacks, Kerio MailServer monitors any unusual change in SMTP activity and once this attack is recognized, it applies several defensive techniques such as slowing down responses, cutting off connections and faking responses.

Kerio MailServer runs on different versions of Microsoft Windows, Linux Red Hat and Apple Mac OS X. Kerio MailServer 5.6 extends its directory service support to include Apple OpenDirectory, allowing users to be managed transparently from Apple’s Mac OS X Server. Kerio MailServer continues its full support for Microsoft Active Directory and is still the only mail server besides Microsoft Exchange with this functionality.

MailChannels Corporation, the global leader in email traffic shaping software, today announced that Apache SpamAssassin users can now download Traffic Control to dramatically enhance the performance of SpamAssassin. Traffic Control uses email traffic shaping to reduce spam by 85 percent more than blacklisting while delivering a 50 to 100-fold improvement in peak load handling. With this release, SpamAssassin users can join leading universities, service providers, and Fortune 500 companies, who have benefited from Traffic Control’s ability to provide a more reliable and cost effective email service.

Traffic Control 3 for SpamAssassin is available at http://mailchannels.com/download. Commercial use requires a license. A 30-day evaluation is provided free of charge.

“Traffic Control for SpamAssassin is an effective add-on that Apache SpamAssassin administrators large and small should evaluate,” said Justin Mason, author of SpamAssassin. “It is clear that there is no perfect defense to spam, and while SpamAssassin provides a level of protection, it can be resource-intensive. Traffic Control for SpamAssassin provides comprehensive coverage of a wide spectrum of spam and other threats, while delivering major scalability benefits.”

Despite the improving accuracy of SpamAssassin, email administrators still struggle to keep up with the continuous onslaught of new spam outbreaks. Spammers respond to better filter accuracy by increasing the volume of spam that they send. Since spam volume is unpredictable, periodic outbreaks overwhelm email systems causing delivery delays and allowing unacceptable amounts of spam to pass into end user inboxes. SpamAssassin is a great spam filter, but like other spam filters it needs to be paired with an effective protocol-layer defense.

Ongoing analysis of customer data by MailChannels shows that 85 percent of spammers abort email delivery when they are connected to a server that severely restricts their bandwidth. Traffic Control exploits this characteristic spammer behavior and others to deflect a significant portion of spam “in flight” before it hits the spam filter or mail server. High spam traffic impacts overall email by creating email delivery delays. After deploying Traffic Control, SpamAssassin users that are experiencing slow times to process messages will see a dramatic drop in email connection traffic.

Cupertino, CA (PRWEB) March 5, 2004 -

Barracuda Networks, the leading provider of enterprise-class spam firewall solutions, announced today the immediate availability of an upgrade to SpamAssassin 2.63 for its entire Barracuda Spam Firewall product line. The Barracuda Spam Firewall Family is an integrated hardware and software product line that provides businesses with an enterprise-class spam and virus protection that is easy to use and affordable. Barracuda Networks is delivering automatic firmware updates to all existing customers free of charge. SpamAssassin 2.63 features enhanced security and performance as well as additional spam blocking features.

“We recognize that spam and virus techniques are constantly evolving and we are committed to making sure our product line is continuously up-to-date on the latest defense methods,” said Dean Drako, president and CEO of Barracuda Networks. “With SpamAssassin we are able to seamlessly integrate the most trusted spam and virus blocking techniques into our appliances without disrupting our customers email service.”

In addition, Barracuda Networks recently made enhancements to its proprietary Barracuda Spam Fingerprint technology making it possible for the Barracuda Spam Firewall to boost spam filtration using specialized URL analysis algorithms that closely examine the URLs contained in suspicious email messages and compare them against BarracudaÂ’s database of known spammer URLs. This improvement was deployed automatically to current Barracuda Spam Firewall customers at no additional charge.

About the Barracuda Spam Firewall

The Barracuda Spam Firewall is available in three models and supports from 1,000 to 25,000 active users with no per user licensing fees. The Barracuda Spam Firewall can be installed in front of the email server in typically less than five minutes and is automatically updated hourly to block new forms of spam and viruses. Its architecture leverages open source virus and spam solutions in conjunction with eight defense layers. The eight defense layers are: denial of service and security protection, IP block list, rate control, virus check with archive decompression, proprietary virus check, user specified rules, spam fingerprint check and a spam rule-based scoring system with Bayesian analysis. The architecture minimizes the processing of each email, which yields the performance required to process millions of messages per day. Unlike software solutions, the Barracuda Spam Firewall reduces the load placed on the email server by off-loading both spam and virus filtering. Barracuda Networks also offers the Energize Update subscription service to automatically update the Barracuda Spam Firewall with the latest spam rules and virus definitions.

About Barracuda Networks

Barracuda Networks is a privately held company with headquarters in Cupertino, California. The company was founded on the premise that spam is growing at an exponential rate and poses a tremendous threat to every companyÂ’s productivity, and the optimal answer is a dedicated plug and play hardware solution.
