Question by Kuba: How to restore a Samsung laptop to factory settings?
I have a Samsung R525 Laptop. I just ordered a Sony Vaio and after I transfer all my needed stuff I’m going to restore it and give it to my parents. To save myself the confusion and frustration, how do I restore it? I’ve read a bunch about it, but it’s all different. Any ideas?

For a Samsung laptop, to reset everything to a saved point when the computer was purchased with no 3rd party programs and data yet or to a user-saved point, turn on or reboot/restart the computer. Tap the ‘F4′ key repeatedly when you see the SAMSUNG logo on your screen to start the Recovery Program. After a moment, the computer boots up in Restoration Mode and the Samsung Recovery Solution screen appears.

This must be done before your operating system begins to load. If you see the Windows logo appear on screen then you were late and you’ll have to restart and try again.

You will have the choice between Basic Restore and Complete Restore. The Basic Restore restores the major Windows files only while maintaining the user configuration and data on drive C in a short time.

A Complete Restore on the other hand deletes everything on drive C and then restores the original contents. Run Complete Restore if the computer does not work even after the Basic Restore has been completed.

Question by : Can I Use the Windows 7 Restore Disc from Another Laptop?
Hello,

I have a new laptop that for some reason didn’t come with the windows 7 home premium restore disc. Can I use the disc from my other laptop as long as I use the product key from the back of the NEW laptop?

The disc I have SAYS Windows 7 “Upgrade Option” from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium, but I have completely wiped the hard-drive and reinstalled windows 7 from scratch using it.

I just want input on whether or not this would work because the NEW laptop is not mine. I’m working on it for someone else and if this doesn’t work, the other person would have to pay DELL like $ 129 because it didn’t come with the software disc or I would have to find the software online which is too much of a hassle.

Any input is valued, thank you.

Yes you can use that even if it’s just an upgrade disc of Windows 7. Read this:

http://www.winsupersite.com/article/win7/clean-install-windows-7-with-upgrade-media

However, forget about your Windows 7 Restore Disc as it might contain drivers specific for your hardware. The best solution is by downloading an ISO image of Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 installer:
x86 (32-bit) version

MD5SUM: c5bb99b2f1a9e7a5b4fbc6e3eff70882

x64 (64-bit) version

http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-24209.iso

MD5SUM: 971843a457b6e0db0af61258cbe7256a

Note that those images are original. Theycome from Digital Rivers, the official e-Commerce partner of Microsoft. You can verify Digital River’s status as an official vendor from this Microsoft press release:

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/events/pdc/docs/digitallocker.doc

Once you’ve saved the ISO image file to your hard drive, right click on the file and select “Open with -> Windows Disc Image Burner” to burn it to a blank DVD disc.

Install the OS on your friend’s laptop and activate it using the product key.that’s on his laptop. You might just need to download and install drivers for the devices that might not be automatically detected by the installer such as the wifi adapter.

Question by Schmidlapp84: Backup and Restore utility for Windows 7 Home Premium?
I normally use Windows 7 pro or ultimate but this machine has home premium. Is there a way to download the backup and restore utility that is in the other versions of Windows 7 or downloadable software “designed for Windows 7″ to backup my C drive to an external drive with the ability to create a backup/restore disc that my PC will boot from if I have any issues and need to restore from my external drive?

Best answer:

Answer by JBere
Try Genie Backup (free for home use). Not sure if it’ll create a bootable backup, but I do know Windows Backup doesn’t do that. You will probably have to install the OS first on a fresh drive, then restore a system backup from your external drive.

Question by : How do you restore computer but keep windows 7?
So basically I have a computer that is running like poo. I want to restore it to factory settings. However, When I purchased my computer it had vista and NOT windows 7. So what I am asking is, “Is it possible to restore my computer to factory settings but not have to re purchase windows 7?”
If so, how do I do this?
Thanks
PS, I no longer have the discs from when I installed windows 7.

Answer by css123
Go under Start and then right click Computer. If you scroll down to the bottom it will have your Product ID. Write it down and install Windows Vista and then install Windows 7 from the Microsoft website and enter in your Product ID to reactivate. They should also have all of your Product IDs, serial keys, purchase statements on file just case. Double check w/ Microsoft though to make sure you can still use the same Product ID.

Question by : Will Windows 7 “System Restore” Option Eliminate Rootkits?
I have a rootkit somewhere deep on my PC and unfortunately Malware Bytes and AVG can’t apparently detect it. I’ve read around and most people say a complete OS reinstall is the only way to guarantee a secure PC.
Unfortunately as well for me is the fact my PC was preinstalled with W7 Home Premium, and did not come with any back up disks/codes for reinstallation. My question is whether or not the System Restore function under “Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Recovery” will suffice? Or would the factory reset option (hopefully) accessible from the reboot menu work?

If you have any answers, including possibly software capable of removing this particular rootkit, please let me know.

As for the rootkit itself, all I know is that it occasionally redirects me randomly from Tumlbr.com(I can could be clicking on anything, not just someone’s link/name), and maybe other sites(not aware yet) and takes me to a a place called “Askthecrew.net”

Thanks

That is a browser hijack virus.
I would try installing what I use:
Microsoft Security Essentials.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials

I have had no problems since using MSE.

You might also want to run the MSE or your programs in the Safe Mode.
