Please help with Portal?

Question by : Please help with Portal?
I’ve downloaded the Portal 1 demo “Portal: First Slice” from Steam, because I wanted to try it before I paid for the game. Every time I try to play it, however, when I click “play” I get an error message saying “this game does not support the graphics processor.”
This is what I have:
Mac 10.5.8 Leopard
Intel GMA X3100

Can anyone tell me if there is a way around this? I’ve been all over Google and have found tons of stuff saying I should be able to play, even though GMA X3100 is not directly supported, but I can’t seem to get it to work. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
I can’t access that website, it doesn’t support my OS. Thanks though.
I’ve searched waaay too many Google things to count, and everything says I should be able to run the game no problem. Is there a setting I have to change or something?

Best answer:

Answer by Cameron Lucas
Unfortunately, if it says your GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) isn’t supported, there’s no real way around that other than upgrading your hardware. Integrated GPUs like yours just dont have the capability to run this game well, if at all.

Try this website: http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/

If it says you meet all the requirements for this game, then it’s a problem with memory or the game its self and that’s something that google can’t fix. Unfortunately neither can I; I’m just a kid.

If it says you don’t meet the recommended requirements, it will tell you what you can upgrade if you can upgrade at all. But there is always the possibility that your hardware can’t handle Portal.

macminer.com sets out to make your quest for Mac-related news simpler, more precise and, above all, successful. Combining the usefulness of a 24h/day news aggregator with advanced search capabilities, macminer is a powerful tool to cope with your daily information overload.

http://www.macminer.com

Professionals and home users alike will benefit from macminer’s unique features. Not only does macminer aggregate headlines from over 50 English-speaking news sources almost up-to-the-minute, but it also helps the reader to find what he or she is looking for. Special options include individual news portfolios which you can build from your preferred sources with a few clicks, and temporary hiding of unwanted sources (again, a single click is enough). If, for example, you’d rather not read about Software Updates, hide them by turning the respective sources off – a decision you can always undo later on. Also, searching for all of a source’s headlines is still possible at any point.

Find similar news with a click

macminer’s Find Similar feature is a real time-saver: Just click on a headline’s search symbol, a magnifier glass, and dig deep to find related news! Although Find Similar shows best matches first, it gives you a list of loosely related news as well. From there, you can go deeper. As a side option, you can search for individual key words from the original headline. macminer uses proprietary linguistic technology to find what you are looking for.

Filter topics

For a quick narrow-down of your news stream, macminer offers over 15 predefined filters on subjects like Apple, Mac OS X, Hardware, Test & Reviews, Software, the iPod, Security, Music, Photo & Video or Developer News. These filters can be easily accessed and bookmarked. iPod-only news, for example, are available at http://www.macminer.com/?f=ipod. In addition, you can easily define your own filter with a maximum of three search terms. In order to receive relevant headlines in a daily newsletter, subscribe to our free NewsAlert and you won’t need to search by yourself for those vital updates any more!

For corporate filters please contact us at corporate@macminer.com.

Is Portal free if previously purchased?

Question by musicnrd: Is Portal free if previously purchased?
Not all too long ago, when Steam was celebrating Steam for Mac OS X , Valve’s Portal was free, and I downloaded it on my Windows PC. Steam sells games “cross-platform”, meaning once you buy them for Windows, they are free to download for Mac OS X (if/when available). I logged into Steam on my new MacBook Pro, and Portal was listed as a free download (the game itself is no longer free; the promo is over).

My question is this: is this free download the Windows version I previously had, or does Steam see that I’m running on a Mac, and download the OS X version (even after the promo’s end)?

Thanks,
Nic

Best answer:

Answer by Silent
As you point out, what you bought was the game, not any particular version of it.

Steam knows you’re running on a Mac because it’s the Mac version of Steam. It will download whichever version is appropriate for the platform it’s running on.

Neustar’s UltraDNS Management Portal Goes Mobile

Opening screen for the UltraMobile application.

Sterling, VA (PRWEB) December 20, 2010

Neustar, Inc. (NYSE: NSR) has taken DNS network management mobile. Starting today UltraDNS customers can access their Managed DNS data on the UltraDNS platform via UltraMobile – the industry’s first mobile application for DNS management. UltraMobile is currently available for devices running the Android operating system and will be coming soon to Apple’s iOS. UltraMobile provides instant alert information and critical functions that users could previously only access from within the UltraDNS Managed Services Portal.

“Our customers are asking for increased flexibility, immediate access and control of their configurations on our global DNS infrastructure. We are excited to be the first managed DNS service provider to launch this type of mobile application,” says Alex Berry, SVP of Internet Infrastructure Services for Neustar. “It’s great that we can provide the most prominent Internet brands with a unique solution to help them manage their services anytime, anywhere.”

It’s universally recognized that the job of DNS administrators has never been tougher. They have to balance increasing demands from their customers and struggle to stay ahead of continuous technology shifts with limited resources, yet leaving no place for downtime. A tool that enables administrators to check the status of services and make changes remotely, virtually anytime and from anywhere, will make their jobs easier.

Everyone can sympathize with the administrator who gets the call in the middle of the night and needs to change a DNS record, or is working in the datacenter and realizes they need to add a new DNS record, but doesn’t have traditional web access.

“I need my administrators to be able to respond to issues immediately regardless of where they are or what they are doing and UltraMobile enables them to do just that. We’re thrilled to be able to start using UltraMobile as part of our critical DNS support system,” says Larry Labas, Director of IT Operations at SonicWALL.

To download the UltraMobile application for your Android device, visit the Android Market and search for UltraMobile.
