Will Windows 8 block users from dual-booting Linux? Microsoft won’t say
Some are concerned that Microsoft’s coming Windows 8 secure-boot technologies and policies could result in users being unable to dual-boot Linux alongside Windows 8. Microsoft officials aren’t commenting on whether the worries are unfounded or grounded.
There’s a report circulating — originating with a Red Hat employee — that says Microsoft’s new secure-boot functionality in Windows 8 could preclude users from running both Windows and Linux on their PCs.
True or false? Well-grounded or unfounded? Microsoft execs will not comment — which is leading many to assume it’s true.
Matthew Garrett, a power management and mobile Linux developer at Red Hat, blogged about the possible lock-out scenario on September 20. He explained how the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) technology and Microsoft’s secure-boot plans — outlined in a new blog post on the “Building Windows 8 blog this week — potentially could thwart those who want to dual boot Linux and Windows 8 on their Windows 8 machines.
Garrett’s conclusion: “It’s probably not worth panicking yet. But it is worth being concerned.”
Microsoft officials have said — via a UEFI session at the company’s recent Build conference, along with the aforementioned blog post — all that they are going to say on the topic.
Here’s what Microsoft has said, re: its secure boot plans for Windows 8. These tidbits are from the previously mentioned Build session on UEFI:
All firmware and software in the boot process must be signed by a trusted Certificate Authority (CA)Required for Windows 8 clientDoes not require a Trusted Platform Module (TPM)Reduces the likelihood of bootkits, rootkits and ransomwareAnother slide from the same talk:
Garrett’s interpretation of Microsoft’s shared information on the topic:
“Microsoft requires that machines conforming to the Windows 8 logo program and running a client version of Windows 8 ship with secure boot enabled. The two alternatives here are for Windows to be signed with a Microsoft key and for the public part of that key to be included with all systems, or alternatively for each OEM to include their own key and sign the pre-installed versions of Windows. The second approach would make it impossible to run boxed copies of Windows on Windows logo hardware, and also impossible to install new versions of Windows unless your OEM provided a new signed copy. The former seems more likely.
“A system that ships with only OEM and Microsoft keys will not boot a generic copy of Linux.”
I can’t resist a rant here: The Windows team’s decision not to comment on this report is an example of the new communication strategy that Microsoft seems to be instituting with Windows 8: Clarification on any Windows 8 topic — not only features and policies that are still unannounced, but also those that already have been disclosed publicly — apparently will not be provided by anyone from Microsoft in an official capacity. The result: An increasing amount of misinformation about Windows 8 is circulating, and Microsoft is doing little or nothing to correct it.
I understand Microsoft’s increased desire for secrecy around its Windows plans, somethingcompany officials began pushing post-Vista. (I haven’t always agreed with the goal, especially when it results in FUD for customers attempting to make rational buying decisions or OEM/ISV partners attempting to build products that work with Windows.) But allowing wrong information to go unchecked in the name of wanting to control the message and the way it is delivered seems like bad business to me.
Back on topic: Does anyone out there have any more to share (in an official capacity or not) about whether you think the new Windows 8 secure boot technologies and policies will block users from dual-booting Linux? Ars Technica’s take: “Ultimately, the Windows 8 changes aren’t likely to wipe out Linux dual-boot scenarios, but they could restrict the types of hardware that will allow them.” Other opinions?

Question by : How can I confirm that, my previous Linux removed from my system?
How can I confirm that, my previous Linux removed from my system? I had dual booting in my system with Windows XP and Linux Mint 8. After sometime I installed Linux Mint 9 into my system, after installation my GRUB loader (Boot menu) show all options for which I want to select Microsoft Windows XP, Linux Mint 9 “isodara” and Linux Mint 8. Finally I got Linux Mint 10 “Julia”, problem is that, when I installed it again my Boot menu show to choose Linux Mint 10 “Julia”, Linux Mint 9 “Isodar” and Linux Mint 8 “Helana” with Microsoft Windows XP. I have 1000GB hard disk with Intel Core 2 Duo processor 2.8GHz. When I select Linux Mint 8 “Helana”, I got myself in it. How can I remove older versions from my PC or they were already removed. Please tell me the right suggestion to check it. Help me.

The KDE Project will release on tuesday, january 27th, the new 1.3 version of KOffice for Linux and Unix operating systems. KOffice is a free set of office applications that integrate with the award winning KDE desktop. KOffice is a light-weight yet feature rich office solution and provides a variety of filters to interoperate with other popular office suites such as OpenOffice.org and Microsoft Office.
KOffice 1.3 consists of the following applications:
KWord – A frame-based word processor.
KSpread – An advanced spreadsheet application.
KPresenter – A full-featured presentation program.
Kivio – A Visio®-style flowcharting application.
Karbon14 – A vector drawing application.
Kugar – A tool for generating business quality reports.
KChart – An integrated graph and chart drawing tool.
KFormula – A powerful formula editor.
Big improvements have been made in KOffice 1.3 with respect to interoperability with other office file formats. It is now for example possible to import as well as export OpenOffice.org documents. Also new is the ability to import PDF files into KWord and make changes to the document. Support for Microsoft document-formats has improved as well.
“Many people have been asking for improved support for the Microsoft document-formats and we have made significant improvements in that area for this release,” says David Faure, a KOffice developer for Klarälvdalens Datakonsult AB. “Especially the support for Microsoft Word 95 and Microsoft Word 97 documents has become much better.”
A KOffice version for Apple’s MacOS X is planned for later this year. “KDE as well as KOffice is built on the cross-platform Qt toolkit,” explains Waldo Bastian, a KDE developer for SUSE LINUX, “now that a free version of Qt has been released for MacOS X it has become very straightforward to make a MacOS X version of KOffice as well. I expect that more software vendors will soon follow a similar approach because it is a great way to expand the market for software products with very little effort.”

Question by : UBUNTO!! EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!! I wanted to try linux so i got advised to download ubuntu for dual-boot! Help!!?
Hey, yesterday i asked if i can run windows 7 and linux on dual boot, just for try. And what/ if any dangers there where with it. I got about 8 answer, where people advised me to install ubuntu. I installed ubuntu but waiting to restart. When i woke up and turned on my computer, i had linux, without ANY of my very VERY important files. So here is the question, HOW THE **** DO I GET MY COMPUTER BACK TO MY WINDOWS 7!!!
Ps: This is very VERY important as i have programs that ONLY run windows 7, and that i gotta use my computer TOMORROW for some very important.
Btw i have not made a repair disc, as i just did what the guys told me to!!! Please help me!!!
here are some answers from the lasts threads, which i dont really know how to use, what they said:
ok, did you dual instal it, or did you instal it over windows 7? there’s hope for the first, a possibility of getting your files back if the second.
if you dual installed it, when you first boot you will be met with a black screen (this is called grub) wit a bunch of options, use the arrow keys to go down to the windows 7 option and press enter. problem solved. if there is no windows 7 option, you successfully formatted windows 7 off of your hard drive. Lucky for you Ubuntu is much smaller than windows 7, so with any luck you will be able to recover your files (search file recovery in Google or ask another yahoo answer for that one). Also while your enjoying Ubuntu, you may wanna check out an application called “Wine” it emulates and runs windows programs, so you may be able to get by with that until you can get it fixed.
OKA HERE is the second thread:
Did you format the drive completely before installing Ubuntu? If so, you’re out of luck. Your files are gone. I’m pretty sure you should be able to see your Windows partition from inside Ubuntu to know it’s still there.
If you set up a Ubuntu partition, you should see a “choose your OS” menu beforehand, which you’d just choose Windows 7 from it. If not, open the terminal and sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst. At the “# Set the default entry to the entry number NUM. Numbering starts from 0″ area, set default to 4 instead of 0. If this doesn’t work, keep changing the value until it boots back into Windows by default. You’ll need root privileges to do this.
This is the third:
Assuming you didn’t install Ubuntu on the same partition where your Windows 7 is installed, you can still recover it by booting from a Windows 7 Emergency disc. If you were foolish enough not to bother creating one while you still had your Windows running then you have to ask a neighbor to make one for you. The Windows 7 emergency recovery disc won’t reinstall your OS. It will only allow you to boot and repair the boot manager and fix the boot files.
If you prefer to reinstall Windows to a state like the day you got the computer from the store then you have to buy the full recovery disc from the computer manufacturer or get hold of a Windows 7 installer DVD. Either way, you will need to reinstall your applications and you will lose all your data that is in drive C. That’s one bad lesson you have to learn for not making full system backups.
Oka, please help me, i dont know ANYTHING about computer software, so please give me a very VERY specific guide on how to get my pc BACK to windows 7, it is VERY important!!! ANd when using recovery thing as guy said, do i install for windows 7 or linux??? I am really deep into the shit… PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!! THis is very VERY important for me!! And i diden’t do a backup as the guys diden say so yesterday, and as i am not that good with computers!!

Answer by inclusive_disjunction
It’s impossible to give you a specific guide, as different manufacturers often have slightly different (or very different) recovery discs. The recovery disc that comes with your computer installs Windows. You boot the computer from it; you do not need to be running either operating system prior to starting the process.
