Question by : I received an important windows vista update for internet explorer 8.?
it is for windows vista x64-based systems, which I have. The last time that i tried to install an internet explorer 8 “important” update on my vista home premium 64-bit notebook,2 months ago, I could not get on the web and lost my Yahoo toolbar with my favorite icons,HP support had to un-install and find the correct driver to get my toolbar back. Now,June 23, I get this new update for windows x64,What should I do? It’s supposed to be safer, etc. Why wasn’t it compatible the last time.Is this new update now fixed to work on vista?so many people had the same prior problem and will be faced with this same decision.
If I already have Internet Explorer 7,what’s the big problem making I.E.8 upgrade compatible without all these problems? Any answers?

Question by : UBUNTO!! EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!! I wanted to try linux so i got advised to download ubuntu for dual-boot! Help!!?
Hey, yesterday i asked if i can run windows 7 and linux on dual boot, just for try. And what/ if any dangers there where with it. I got about 8 answer, where people advised me to install ubuntu. I installed ubuntu but waiting to restart. When i woke up and turned on my computer, i had linux, without ANY of my very VERY important files. So here is the question, HOW THE **** DO I GET MY COMPUTER BACK TO MY WINDOWS 7!!!

Ps: This is very VERY important as i have programs that ONLY run windows 7, and that i gotta use my computer TOMORROW for some very important.

Btw i have not made a repair disc, as i just did what the guys told me to!!! Please help me!!!

here are some answers from the lasts threads, which i dont really know how to use, what they said:

ok, did you dual instal it, or did you instal it over windows 7? there’s hope for the first, a possibility of getting your files back if the second.

if you dual installed it, when you first boot you will be met with a black screen (this is called grub) wit a bunch of options, use the arrow keys to go down to the windows 7 option and press enter. problem solved. if there is no windows 7 option, you successfully formatted windows 7 off of your hard drive. Lucky for you Ubuntu is much smaller than windows 7, so with any luck you will be able to recover your files (search file recovery in Google or ask another yahoo answer for that one). Also while your enjoying Ubuntu, you may wanna check out an application called “Wine” it emulates and runs windows programs, so you may be able to get by with that until you can get it fixed.

OKA HERE is the second thread:

Did you format the drive completely before installing Ubuntu? If so, you’re out of luck. Your files are gone. I’m pretty sure you should be able to see your Windows partition from inside Ubuntu to know it’s still there.

If you set up a Ubuntu partition, you should see a “choose your OS” menu beforehand, which you’d just choose Windows 7 from it. If not, open the terminal and sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst. At the “# Set the default entry to the entry number NUM. Numbering starts from 0″ area, set default to 4 instead of 0. If this doesn’t work, keep changing the value until it boots back into Windows by default. You’ll need root privileges to do this.

This is the third:

Assuming you didn’t install Ubuntu on the same partition where your Windows 7 is installed, you can still recover it by booting from a Windows 7 Emergency disc. If you were foolish enough not to bother creating one while you still had your Windows running then you have to ask a neighbor to make one for you. The Windows 7 emergency recovery disc won’t reinstall your OS. It will only allow you to boot and repair the boot manager and fix the boot files.

If you prefer to reinstall Windows to a state like the day you got the computer from the store then you have to buy the full recovery disc from the computer manufacturer or get hold of a Windows 7 installer DVD. Either way, you will need to reinstall your applications and you will lose all your data that is in drive C. That’s one bad lesson you have to learn for not making full system backups.

Oka, please help me, i dont know ANYTHING about computer software, so please give me a very VERY specific guide on how to get my pc BACK to windows 7, it is VERY important!!! ANd when using recovery thing as guy said, do i install for windows 7 or linux??? I am really deep into the shit… PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!! THis is very VERY important for me!! And i diden’t do a backup as the guys diden say so yesterday, and as i am not that good with computers!!

Answer by inclusive_disjunction
It’s impossible to give you a specific guide, as different manufacturers often have slightly different (or very different) recovery discs. The recovery disc that comes with your computer installs Windows. You boot the computer from it; you do not need to be running either operating system prior to starting the process.

Question by Dan: Laptop security or network security: which is more important?
According to a 2007 study by the Ponemon Institute and Redemtech, 70% of data breaches result from the loss of “off-network” equipment. That is, equipment that’s not connected to the Internet. There are some other staggering numbers, but the point is that a huge percentage of data breaches are NOT “hackers” breaking into networks. They’re good old laptop thefts, basically. So which is more important to focus energies on (not that any aspect should be completely neglected): laptop security or network security?

Best answer:

Answer by Bill
Hello;

I think that given the statistics, laptop security is more important. My guess is that the reason the network security is more effective is because professionals are charged with keeping the network safe … the security of the laptop is left to the user.

Perhaps installing the Linux operating system on a laptop might make it more secure? The file systems are automatically password protected by the operating system.

Thanks for the info!

Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group logo

San Francisco (Vocus) April 2, 2009

Your good email habits have become an important tool to help inbox providers and ISPs protect you and other customers from online fraud and spam. A new white paper for IT professionals and volume email senders from the Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group (MAAWG) demystifies the messaging reputation technology now used by most large service providers to identify abusive and errant emails as junk mail.

“MAAWG Message Sender Reputation Concepts and Common Practices” explains how online behavior by a person or an organization can be used to calculate the likelihood a message is spam. Combined with other technologies, it is a powerful tool to improve email deliverability because it more precisely ties accountability to the sender’s identity rather than analyzing message content, according to the paper’s editor, Michael Adkins, co-chair of the MAAWG technical committee and AOL senior systems programmer.

“Messaging reputation has evolved beyond the simple whitelist-blacklist approach to provide a more sophisticated range of responses than just ‘good or bad.’ As a result, fewer legitimate emails are tagged as junk while more fraudulent and annoying spam messages are kept out of inboxes, and the technology can also help service providers operate more efficiently,” Adkins said.

Just as a person’s or company’s behavior affects how they are perceived in the community, messaging reputation is based on a calculated evaluation of the identity’s ongoing compliance with industry-accepted email practices. The white paper provides an overview of a messaging reputation system’s assessment goals, models and algorithms. It was completed at the MAAWG 15th General Meeting in February and released to the industry today on the organization’s Web site, www.MAAWG.org.

Security Needs Support Continued MAAWG Growth

The organization’s 15th meeting in San Francisco was one of its largest with 350 online security professionals from 10 countries and 130 companies collaborating against botnets, spam and all forms of abusive messaging. The 30 sessions over four days included a keynote by Washington Post journalist Brian Krebs sharing how his investigative reporting led to identifying McColo-hosted botnets; talks by ICANN representatives and Knujon’s Bob Bruen on fighting domain abuse; and a session with FBI executives on finding and prosecuting botnet masters. User advocate Jayne Hitchcock of HaltAbuse.org spoke on educating customers.

Other strategic projects from the meeting will be addressed in MAAWG committees over the next few months, including mobile spam reporting formats, botnet mitigation practices, and feedback loops to help providers estimate costs, among other issues. These and other topics will be featured at the MAAWG 16th General Meeting, June 9-11 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

About the Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group (MAAWG)

The Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group (MAAWG) is where the messaging industry comes together to work against spam, viruses, denial-of-service attacks and other online exploitation. MAAWG (www.MAAWG.org) represents almost one billion mailboxes from some of the largest network operators worldwide. It is the only organization addressing messaging abuse holistically by systematically engaging all aspects of the problem, including technology, industry collaboration and public policy. MAAWG leverages the depth and experience of its global membership to tackle abuse on existing networks and new emerging services. Headquartered in San Francisco, Calif., MAAWG is an open forum driven by market needs and supported by major network operators and messaging providers.
