Sure, emailing your Microsoft Word documents is easy.  Sure, you do it all the time.  And most likely it’s just as sure that you didn’t know about the many problems related to the emailing of Word documents.  Allow me to explain.

Though emailing Word documents to your friends and colleagues is usually a perfectly appropriate thing to do, it really is best to use caution and to not assume that everyone will be able to read (or even open) your Word files.  Why use caution?  Several reasons:

The message will likely be larger than it really needs to be.  This is because Word documents are B-I-G.  Why should you care? You should care because you’re essentially forcing your recipients to receive and open oversized documents.  Also, emails with larger attachments take longer to send and longer to download. It’s possible that your recipient might not have Word.  For example, many people read their emails on their Treos, Blackberries, or cell phones–none of which have Word. Many email programs won’t allow Word documents to be opened directly, and some won’t even allow Word documents to be saved to disk on account of the unfortunately-far-too-common rampant virus-spreading that can be done via Word documents. Emails with Word attachments are much more likely to be filtered and marked as spam or potential viruses; meaning that it’s entirely possible your email won’t even make it through to your recipient.

If there’s no need to send content in a Word document, then it’s best to not do it.  The important piece of information to take away here is that if you’re sending just a small bit of information via email in a Word document, it’s usually a better practice to simply paste your Word document’s text directly into the body of your email.

Question by Goldbricker: How do I easily launch Mac documents with VMWare Windows programs?
I’m running Mac OS X Leopard and VMWare with Windows Vista. If I have a file in Mac OS X, is there an easy way to open the file with a VMWare Windows Vista program without copying it to a shared folder? Are there any third party plugins out for this?

No as far as I know you need to copy your file from Leopard to the transfer folder and pick it up there.
I have Parallels on my iMac and that is how I do it. At this stage I would consider VMware to be the”3rd” party.

I gather Apple is working on virtualisation in Leopard to allow Windows apps to be “run” with out needing VMware or Bootcamp – but that is just a rumor.

What apps or files are you needing to copy over to Windows and why?

Also to answer you original question – you can’t launch a Mac app with Windows in VMware – you can only open a document with the appropriate application.

I recently installed Microsoft Office Word onto my laptop, after I had to delete it for another issue, and used Microsoft Works Processor for a while. But now that’s my default for opening documents. How can I make it Mic. Office word instead?

just uninstall and reinstall microsoft word, it’s the simplest way

or you can manually configure program defaults via the control panel. or just right click on any document type you want to open in word, chose “open with” and than highlight microsoft word, and check the box that says “always open this file type with this program”

Question by malusita: If a data recovery program is installed, will I be able to recover web sites visited and documents?
My husband installed a recovery data program, I am afraid he wants to trace the documents I sent and the web sites I open. Is this possible to recover even though I deleted history and microsoft office documents I typed and sent to different places?

With a data recovery program it should be possible. Of course, how well this will work, will depend on how well the user understands the software and how well it has been configured.
