Microsoft released its Windows 8 Developer Preview operating System to public in its BUILD conference in Anaheim, CA yesterday. This download is available for free. Anyone can download the software and you don’t need to register as a developer to download it. You can download it from the Microsoft Website.

The download is available as an .iso image which needs to be burned on a DVD or a USB flash drive. If you have Windows 7, you can use the Windows Disc Image Burner utility for converting the .iso file into an installable media. You can use any DVD burning software if you have Windows XP and Vista.

To install it the following system requirements are needed:

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver Taking advantage of touch input requires a screen that supports multi-touchMicrosoft has made available three different versions of Windows 8 for download (two versions built for 64-bit systems which use new processors and can make use of more RAM, versus older 32-bit PCs that use earlier chips and less memory), which all show up as an ISO file when downloaded.

The three versions, all in English, are:1. Windows Developer Preview with developer tools, 64-bit: A 4.8-gigabyte download, this version includes Windows 8 Developer Preview operating system with a Windows software developer kit for Metro style apps made up of Microsoft Visual Studio 11 Express and Microsoft Expression Blend 5, as well as 28 preview apps.2. Windows Developer Preview, 64-bit: A 3.6-gigbyte download, this version is made up of just the Windows 8 Developer Preview OS and the 28 preview apps — no added developer tools3. Windows Developer Preview English, 32-bit: A 2.8-gigabyte download includes the Windows 8 Developer Preview OS and the 28 preview apps.Since it is a pre-beta version of Windows 8 for developer, it may not be stable or work correctly as the final version of the software will. Microsoft recommends not using this in a production environment or on your personal machines. Get a spare one if you want to test it. Also, some product features and functionality may require advanced or additional hardware, or installation of other software.

Few things to keep in mind before you go ahead with the installation: Windows 8 Developer preview can’t be uninstalled. You should have restored your previous operating system or have its installation media. Only clean install is supported on all builds. The full set of installation options will only become available when setup is launched in Windows.

In anticipation of the upcoming release of Apple’s Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, which features the new Dashboard technology, DashboardExposed.com, an independent developer resource web site has been launched.

Dashboard is a technology introduced in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger which allows developers to create mini applications, called Widgets, using stardard web development tools, including HTML, JavaScript, and CSS. This makes desktop application development possible for a whole new class of developers, who were previously limited to the web in what they could create.

DashboardExposed.com features news about Dashboard, tutorials and how-to documents for developers, user-contributed Widgets for download, and a discussion forum for sharing knowledge about Dashboard development techniques. The goal is to foster a community of users, to promote the technology to a wider audience, and to help new users get off to a solid start.

DashboardExposed.com is a free resource, funded only by ads powered by the Google AdSense program.

Android Developer Challenge Award Goes to HandWx(TM) Location-Based Mobile Weather Application

Android Developer Challenge Top 50 Winner – HandWx

Norman, OK (PRWEB) May 12, 2008

Pinpoint forecasts and location-based severe weather feeds will soon be accessed directly from your mobile phone due to the work of two innovative Android Developer Challenge partners, Weather Decision Technologies, Inc. (WDT) and Weathertop Consulting, LLC. The two companies have come out with the HandWx™ “follow-me” mobile weather application, which was recognized today with a prestigious $ 25,000 award, as one the top 50 most promising first round Challenge entrants among more than 1,700 entries worldwide.

The award-winning mobile weather program was developed using WDT’s advanced real-time Doppler Radar data, overlaid onto Google Maps. This allows users to view precise weather radar and forecasts with easy search and “zoom in/out” functions, using gestures familiar to all Google Maps aficionados. HandWx allows weather trackers to view weather information within storm patterns, right down to the street and house level. The application provides unique, location-based weather feeds and forecasts sent directly to Android-based handsets, based on precise location coordinates.

“Unlike Internet-based weather applications, HandWx knows where you are, even when you don’t,” said Roland Schweitzer of Weathertop Consulting. “Imagine you’re on a trip driving across the country and you want to know if it’s going to be warm enough to camp outdoors in your lightweight sleeping bag,” said Schweitzer. “You don’t know a zip code and there’s no discernible town nearby to get a quick bearing on a forecast. Flip on your Android phone and load up HandWx and you’ll soon have a forecast for up to seven days for your current location. You can track radar and storm data, wherever you are, and if the forecast calls for a cold or stormy night, that old motel you just passed won’t look so bad.”

Users can get a forecast for any location in the United States by typing in a zip code, latitude/longitude coordinates, a city and state, or the address of a local milestone. The Android geo-coding automatically locates the latitude and longitude for the information you entered, allowing HandWx to deliver the latest forecast for that location. Alternatively, triangulation with cellular tower signals helps locate your precise location which can be used for getting a forecast or accessing tiled weather radar data whenever you are in “follow-me” mode.

State-of-the-Science Radar and Forecasts

WDT produces radar imagery with the highest spatial resolution available, at 1 kilometer. It also provides the highest temporal resolution, with updates every 2 minutes. WDT serves up the national United States radar mosaic in real-time and on-demand, using a proprietary “weather tile server”. WDT accesses the low-latency streaming data feeds of all 136 Level II NEXRAD National Weather Service radars to produce these radar images. “WDT uses cutting edge quality control and merging techniques to create an extremely accurate and timely picture of the current radar, and delivers it as Google Maps-compatible tiles,” said Michael Eilts, President and CEO of WDT. “We update the tiles every 5 minutes, for the entire country, and with street level zoom and transparency capabilities, it’s easy to get a view of information that is usually totally obscured by radar echo. With the transparency function, you can view precise locations within the storm’s path, and then predict with certainty whether you need to take action,” said Eilts.

HandWx serves up these precise and uncluttered radar images for countrywide/regional/state or citywide areas. All data forecasts are provided by the United States Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the National Weather Service via the National Digital Forecast Database, which is updated hourly.

Rapid animation and “follow me” updates

The HandWx high quality radar tiles are sophisticated overlays to the Android map interface, which allow you to animate storm paths and view the radar by roaming and zooming at will over the entire United States. Weather trackers can ask the application to follow their current location and update the radar tiles every 5 minutes as they move. Future HandWx applications will include nearby lightning strikes, hurricane forecast tracks, and National Weather Service watches and warnings for your current location or any location that mobile users choose.

Submissions to the Android Developer Challenge I took place from January 2 through April 14, 2008. The 50 applications selected for the first award will then be eligible for even greater recognition, via ten $ 275,000 awards and ten $ 100,000 awards, for a total of $ 10 million in awards.

Urban Airship Mobile App Trends Report: Monetization and Measurement Big for 2011; Developer Survey Also Points to Growth Across Multiple Platforms

Portland, Oregon (Vocus/PRWEB) January 06, 2011

Mobile developers will put more energy into monetizing and measuring their apps in the upcoming year, according to survey data from Urban Airship, a mobile services platform provider. The Android platform will continue to gain market share, Apple iOS and Android will be the dominant mobile platforms, and BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 will see notable increases in app development. These findings are detailed in Urban Airship’s 1st Annual Mobile Application Development Survey, released today and available for download on the company website.

Designed to measure trends in the mobile application space, the survey asked the broad Urban Airship developer community about their development plans and wish lists for mobile apps in 2011. The interesting data includes the following highlights:

Mobile app revenue will become increasingly meaningful in 2011 and in-app purchase will be a top strategy for app monetization.
App management and analytics will be increasingly critical. As developers seek to measure success for their apps, analytics and push notification management top their list of needs.
iOS and Android development continues to dominate in terms of developer support in 2011, but BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 will see notable growth.

Three hundred and eighteen mobile application developers completed the survey; roughly half of them use the Urban Airship mobile platform currently. The majority of respondents use Urban Airship’s platform mainly for mobile messaging—sending push notifications to users via the app.

Revenue and Monetization Key to App Success

The importance of revenue to app developers is growing dramatically. Of developers surveyed, only 13% of developers plan to develop a non-revenue–generating app in 2011, compared with 33% who did so in 2010. Non-revenue–generating apps could exist to support an overall branding campaign for companies or could be developed to provide a brand with a presence in mobile.

“Clearly, as apps become more mainstream, companies are starting to realize their value as a content-delivery mechanism,” says Scott Kveton, CEO of Urban Airship. “In 2011, mobile is going to be another profit-generating channel for companies and we are seeing them updating their apps to enable monetization.” The most common revenues from apps come from the app’s purchase price, through in-app advertising, or via in-app purchase, which allows end users to purchase additional content and/or features from within the app itself.

In-app purchase is quickly becoming the preferred method for increasing revenue in 2011. In 2010, the majority of app developers (47%) named initial download as their main source of revenue, with in-app purchase used by only 8%. In 2011, in-app purchase implementations will jump to 31%, a significant increase that points to the evolution of the mobile app and the strategies behind them.

App Management and Measurement: Getting More Value From Your Apps

Although the majority of respondents (64%) say they measure mobile app success primarily by the number of downloads, a significant number of them are also considering other success measurements. A full 60% of respondents indicated that app usage is a key metric, as are revenue from the app (44%) and app store ranking (34%). In 2011, fewer developers will measure app success solely by the number of downloads. For many, the real driver of success is what happens with the app after it has been downloaded to a user’s device.

“Downloads indicate how easy the app is to discover in the app store. That’s it,” says Kveton. “If the app isn’t being used, if the user is not engaging with your mobile brand in a meaningful way, if the app has no real connection to your business, then it’s hard to validate it as a success. Our customers recognize this, which is why we are seeing such demand for measurement and analytics. Brands are looking for benchmarks of success.”

As brands look to benchmark their success and user engagement, they are turning to push notifications in increasing numbers to make the app more valuable, persistent and engaging. As one survey respondent puts it: “I want to create apps that are not thrown away after few days. Push notification keeps our app alive, and it stays installed on the iPhone.”

iOS and Android Dominate Developer Mindshare

Respondents indicated that iOS and Android would continue to dominate their plans for mobile app support in 2011. Ninety percent of respondents indicated they will be developing for iOS and 74% will be developing for Android in 2011. Despite significant growth in developer support for Blackberry and Windows Phone7 in 2011, these platforms lag significantly behind iOS and Android, with 24% support for WP7 and 22% for Blackberry.

Survey results indicate that developers believe they need to support both iOS and Android to attain wide success and will be evaluating their return on investment in supporting a third or fourth platform.

The survey results are available for download on the Urban Airship website: http://urbanairship.com/media/documents/ua_2010_mobile_dev_survey.pdf

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) October 26, 2009

Flurry, Inc., the leading provider of in-application analytics for mobile devices, today reported an unprecedented 94% increase in application project starts within its system by Android developers between September and October projected totals. Beyond its android-focused partnerships with T-Mobile and Motorola, Flurry attributes increased Android developer focus in its system to the upcoming November launch of Droid by Verizon Wireless.

“Flurry market data shows that Android continues to gain interest from application developers, and that iPhone is no longer the only game in town,” said Simon Khalaf, Flurry president and chief officer. “Developers who used to develop only for iPhone are now adding Android applications to their line up in record numbers.”

Flurry Analytics collects data from over two thirds of all Android-powered devices. Since launching Android support in January 2009, over 500 developers have embedded Flurry Analytics across more than 1,500 applications, tracking over a combined 100 million end user sessions to date. Of the estimated 3 million Android handsets deployed, over 2.1 million include applications integrated with Flurry Analytics.

Significant mobile industry investment in Google Android is expected over the next several years. According to research released earlier this month by Kevin Dulaney, Gartner Research, OEM’s such as Samsung, Motorola, HTC, Dell and others are forecasted to ship more than 75 million handsets in 2012, overtaking iPhone. Additionally, operators including Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint have announced that they will carry Android handsets.
