Brush of Truth, a book app for kids 8-12 recognized for its appeal to reluctant readers, is now offering free lesson plans that are aligned with Common Core State Standards. Curriculum can be downloaded from the app website, http://www.storybayou.com.

Brush of Truth, geared to third- through sixth-graders, is the first book app created by Story Bayou, a moms vision to get tweens to read. Written in second person, your voice, Brush of Truth lets the user choose how the action unfolds at critical points in the plot. Brush of Truth has 125 pages of story and colorful illustrations, with 65 decision points and 20 possible endings. The app is $ 1.99 on iTunes, Kindle Fire, Google Play (Android) and Windows 7.

Brush of Truth recently won the 2012 Media of the Year award in the Interactive Book App category in Creative Child Magazines Creative Toy Awards. The app was named a Recommended iPad Book App for Older and Reluctant Readers Ages 8-12 by Digital Storytime, and one of 6 Interactive Book Apps to Get Kids Excited About Reading by Tecca.

The language arts lessons created for Brush of Truth include Powerpoint presentations, worksheets and teacher answer keys. They were developed by Cyndie Sebourn, a retired National Board Certified Teacher and owner of Sascyn Publishing, Inc., which creates Common Core-aligned curriculum for educational apps.

Brush of Truth is unique in that it is a narrative where children can choose different scenarios as the story progresses. Its curriculum focuses on writing compound and complex sentences correctly, as well as on creative writing, Sebourn said. Apps alone in the classroom are not enough; educators need apps with curriculum that is Common Core State Standard-aligned.

The app tells the story of two tweens who find an enchanted paintbrush. They begin to discover its powers as they go in adventures under the ocean, inside a sand castle, and while rescuing a sea creature.

With the introduction of the iPads in my classroom, students are clamoring to play Brush of Truth. They love the choices of where the story will take them and it has been a godsend for some of my more reluctant readers, said Jayne Clare, a founder of the review site Teachers With Apps, and a resource teacher for fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth graders. My students are loving this app! Every day someone asks for it if I haven’t brought it out.

Julie Landry Laviolette, author of Brush of Truth and founder of Story Bayou, said book apps are an emerging trend in childrens literacy. Book apps are an exciting new tool to get kids to read, she said. It also is an inexpensive form of educational technology that reinforces vocabulary skills, higher level thinking , cause and effect and reading comprehension.

Laviolette, a New Orleans native, is a former columnist and editor for The Times-Picayune. She currently lives in Fort Lauderdale, Fl., where she contributes to The Miami Herald, South Florida Sun-Sentinel, South Florida Parenting and more than 30 regional parenting publications in the U.S. and Canada.

Story Bayou, founded in 2011, partnered with Linxter, Inc., a Cooper City software engineering company, to create the mobile app. Brush of Truth was released in February 2012.

The success of Apple’s iPhone, iPad and other smart phone devices boost up iOS App Development and make it larger than life in the past few years. Today, more ‘n’ more professionals as well as technical experts are getting into iOS application development to showcase their creativity and programming skills by making unusual apps for tiny hand held devices like iPhone, iPad, iPod touch etc.

Developing apps for iOS devices is not the kid’s play, and even the experienced iOS developers often make some critical mistakes while developing applications for iOS devices. One of those critical mistakes is iOS memory mistakes, which many novice iOS App developers often commit while designing and developing applications. Such mistakes are highlighted below in order to aware upcoming iOS developers to avoid such crucial iOS memory mistakes.

Many developers often forget to include dealloc method in each class, which cause memory management problem during iOS development. Always make appropriate dealloc method in each class to avoid memory management issues.

Also it happens that many time developers never call super dealloc method from dealloc, which later on crash the memory and cause serious issues in your app development. Just remember that you can’t directly call any dealloc method, you must first call super dealloc method and that should be only called in your dealloc method.

NSLog Statements are very helpful during debugging of the app, but overuse of it could slow down the performance of the app. The more you use NSLog statements within your app, the more memory it will consume and at the end you may get memory warning from your app itself. So, try to avoid making such mistakes and try to bypass NSLog statements if you really don’t need them.

Underestimating the iOS debugging commands! New iOS developers are often not aware about the power of iOS debugging tools and never consider them during their app development. NSDebugEnabled, MallocStackLogging and other environment variables could help you out to identify the causes for crash and all. So, try to get familiar with iOS debugging commands and incorporate them within your app development to avoid memory crashes.

Apart from above major memory mistakes, many developers often forget to set pointers to nil after releasing, using retainCount of the objects which cause serious memory issues later on.

So, these are some crucial iOS memory mistakes iOS App Developers should avoid during their iOS application Development.

The aim of the game is for players to guess as many idioms as they can from the paintings, or hunt for them from a list. Its not as easy as it sounds.

The first Proverbidioms painting was completed in 1975 and published as a poster in 1980, when it became an instant hit, selling hundreds of thousands of copies, and appearing on television, in books, and on jigsaw puzzles. Over the years three additional Proverbidioms pictures were created. Now, as art meets the digital age, Proverbidioms the App for iPad offers an exciting new interactive experience.

Each picture can be scrolled, swiped, and zoomed up to 6X, allowing players to explore the colorful artwork in stunning HD detail. Hundreds of dynamic sounds bring all four pictures to life and truly immerse the player into the world of Proverbidioms. Once players have successfully guessed an idiom, they are rewarded with the idioms definition, usage, and fascinating origins, not to mention a big laugh, which makes the app educational as well as entertaining.

Unlike so many games these days, Proverbidioms the App is a relaxing family game that encourages players to sit back and enjoy incredible art at their own pace, while challenging their wits as they seek to identify over 850 idioms.

Greenstone Games worked very closely with the artist in designing this app, to ensure a quality, entertaining product that lives up to the spirit of the original paintings, and which is perhaps a work of art all to itself.

“Party like it’s 1999″

That’s what Prince said in his famous song, 1999, written all the way back in 1982.

But, whether it’s 1982, 1999, 2009, 2010, 2011… it sounds like a very good life philosophy to take into a new year, don’t you think!

Especially, if you think of ‘partying’ – like I do – as another form of living in the moment, enjoying what you do as much as you can, flowing with what life brings you, and – above all – growing…

So, on that note, I give you 7 free inspirational quotes to inspire you to GROW this coming new year.

And I shall link these inspirational quotations with the most common new year resolutions, to help illustrate the benefits of making AND achieving those resolutions (should they apply to you).

Just in case you needed any convincing, so to speak.

Common New Year Resolution #1: LOSE WEIGHT

“Take care of your body.

It’s the only place you have to live.” –Jim Rohn

So, does it *really* matter than you lose weight, or is it actually more important that you look after your body via healthy eating, and regular bouts of exercise.

Losing weight is hard, maybe even ‘impossible’ for you right now. But walking a bit more, and taking a little bit of extra care about the temple that is your body (don’t laugh!) is something you CAN do.

Choose a resolution you can achieve. It’s only fair on you.

Common New Year Resolution #2: STICK TO A BUDGET

“A fool and his money are easily parted.” –Proverb

Hmm, it can be difficult to stick to a budget, it really can.

After all there are so many ‘shiny things’ to buy. There are so many items on sale at such cheap, cheap prices. And you’re going to go into debt at the end of the month, anyway, so what harm does this little extra spend make now?

Still, it is hard to argue with proverbs, you’ve got to admit.

Common New Year Resolution #3: FIND MY SOULMATE

“There is more hunger for love and appreciation in this world than for bread.” –Mother Teresa

Love makes the world go round.

It also makes the world go ’round the bend’ with frustration:

* Why are there so many frogs to kiss? * Why are all the best women taken? * Why can’t he (or she) be more, y’know, ‘normal’ like me?

Quite simply – and it’s time to stand in front of the mirror now, Dear Reader – if you’re serious about finding a great partner in the new year, then you seriously have to change what you’re doing to attract them into your life.

Stop blaming the supply of fish.

Look in the mirror. The blame lies there. (Ouch.)

Common New Year Resolution #4: QUIT SMOKING

“If people don’t love themselves enough to cut down on their smoking, they may love someone else enough to do it.” –Anonymous smoker

I’ve never been a smoker, so I don’t know how confoundedly difficult it is to quit the habit.

I don’t know how this habit weaves itself into the patterns of daily life, so that something as simple as that first cup of coffee in the day also yields a yearning for a quick drag.

I don’t know how someone else’s smoke can do the same.

But if you’re a smoker, you do – you know all of these things.

And you also know that it *is* possible to quit smoking – IF you want to.

It’s up to you…

Common New Year Resolution #5: FIND A BETTER JOB

“Without work, all life goes rotten. But when work is soulless, life stifles and dies.” –Albert Camus

What is the point of work, at the end of the day, if it’s NOT a means to a satisfactory end?

Work to live or live to work. It’s a simple choice. It involves costs you might not be willing to pay – like saying ‘bye bye’ to the very latest car or TV or iPhone, etc. – but it IS a simple choice.

Work to live or live to work. Again, it’s up to you…

Common New Year Resolution #6: LEARN SOMETHING NEW

“Education is the best provision for old age.” –Aristotle

There is nothing better for an aging mind than to be kept busy – busy with learning.

Just like the body needs exercise, so does the mind. And this is especially so when you consider the often mind-deadening impact that ‘popular’ TV has on it.

So learn a new language.

Or find a new hobby.

But keep stretching your mind…

Common New Year Resolution #7: GET ORGANISED

“The way to do things is to begin.” –Horace Greely

Of course, it’s important to plan – to plan your day, to plan your week and even to plan your new year. (It’s probably not going to be possible to achieve ALL of your goals, your new year resolutions, without some form of planning.)

But planning only takes you so far. Action needs to get involved, too.

And that just means taking the first step…

So there you are, 7 free inspirational quotes and 7 of the most common new year resolutions.

Let’s hope you’re able to put these inspirational quotations into practice – this time, this year.

Let’s hope that these final, cutting words WILL NOT apply to you…

“Many people look forward to the new year for a new start on old habits.” — Author Unknown

Happy New Year

What better way to learn something new, to stretch your mind, than to try and do the ‘impossible’ – to earn an income from your very own website. It’s all explained here… http://www.site-buildit.com From Steve M Nash – Owner of SelfHelpCollective.com

The mfc71.dll is a crucial file for Microsoft Visual Studio and any program or application that uses it. Usually, the error message is caused by a missing file, so to fix mfc71.dll you’ll need to repair or replace the dll.

You’ve probably received this message because the file was either corrupted or accidentally deleted by you or a program.

Sometimes a bad installation or uninstallation is the cause. Because so many programs use this file, it might be difficult to pin down which program might be the cause. However, if your error occurs during a specific program, then that program is the most likely culprit.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the program to see if that fixes your error.

It is best to be certain that your program is up to date.

Download any updates, service packs, or patches to the faulty program. It might be possible that the error has been corrected in the recent update.

Install any pending Windows updates. Sometimes updates will include repairs and patches to registry and.dll files.

If your error message contains a message including the bcmwltry.exe file, then you’ll need to reinstall your Broadcom wireless network card drivers. This is a known issue, so if this is the nature of your error, be certain to follow the download instructions on the Broadcom website.

Upgrade or update your Internet Explorer. Malfunctions can occur when using older versions of IE.

Viruses are always likely, especially if you browse random sites frequently. To prevent virus infection, keep a high security firewall up at all times. Sometimes the restrictions can be annoying, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Run a deep scan on your computer a few times a month. This will help delete suspicious files that like to bunch up in your Temp folders and system registry.

Although there are several free antivirus software programs on the internet, they are often more specialized and slightly less user friendly. If you are new to antivirus programs, I suggest buying a medium range program to help you stay virus-free.

Keep your registry clean of corrupted files and resource-hogging fragments. You can download a registry cleaner to fix mfc71.dll errors. A registry cleaner will replace and repair missing, infected, or corrupt system files.

You know, I’ve fixed all sorts of LCD monitor problems. You name it…white display, dim/no display, blinking LED, no visual although the power indicator is on, stuck pixel, rainbow display and so on…

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not bragging or anything.

I couldn’t afford to attend one of those 2-3 day repair courses because they are waaay to expensive where I’m at. otherwise I don’t know what I would do!

You see, I came across this downloadable repair guide and it helped me solve lots of LCD monitor problems. What’s great about it is that it contains a ton of step-by-step pictures so a hardcore visual learner like yours truly can follow along easily.

I really can’t follow repair guides that are very heavy in text. Well, what can I say; I’m a visual type of person…

Anyway, I’m in a sharing mood right now so here are some tips I hope would assist you in some way…

Oh, by the way, you can get the download details for the LCD monitor repair guide I mentioned by . A new window will open, I believe.

Here’s one of the most common LCD problems: No display on screen yet the power indicator comes on temporarily. This irritating issue is induced by several factors such as defective backlights, busted high voltage transformer, IC inverter problem, spoiled filter caps, etc.

And if you want to know if the problem lies with the main board, then all you have to do is make certain that supply voltage flows to the inverter IC after the display goes off. If voltage is present, then you should focus on the primary components in the inverter board.

The first step is to check the main or primary section. Test all components in that area, especially the power FET, ampere main fuse and PWM IC. I’ve encountered this problem many times before and more often than not, the issue lies with these components.

Once again, if you want to learn how to solve a wide variety of LCD monitor problems quickly and easily, be sure to download step-by-step repair guide that’s jam-packed with photographic demonstrations.

Downloading such LCD monitor repair manual direct to your computer is now possible by following this underlined blue link:

Download details are available on that site so good luck and God bless!

One of the most common errors is a ‘stop’ error or infamously known as the blue screen of death (BSOD). Apparently this problem can be hard to solve by turning the computer on and off and can usually only be resolved by viewing the stop code in order to understand what the problem exactly is. Stop codes indentify a specific problem; hence each code (each has different number and letters) represents a particular error.

Stop codes can be found on the blue screen of death, however, since Windows’ systems restart after an error occurs, it can be somewhat troublesome to read the code. To overcome this, you will have to disable Windows’ automatic restart. Then, finally, you can read the code and begin to comprehend the problem.

Common codes include the STOP 0×00000002, which may be followed by the error ‘device_queue_not_busy’. The most likely cause for most codes is an error with hardware or device drivers, which are generally, resolved using a few simple steps.

First of all, reboot the computer as the blue screen of death may just vanish as if it never existed. The stop error can be a temporary issue due to unknown errors within the system. If this fails, next you need to troubleshoot.

With this sort of problem, you have to ask yourself what it may have been caused by – could it be new a new program? New hardware? Updates? If there has been recent activity or changes, simply undo it and test for the stop error. To undo the problem, you can use system restore, reverse any updates on driver devices, and starting up with last known good configuration, which will undo registry and driver changes. Which method you choose will depend on the problem.  It may be also be caused by out of date driver issues, so updating them may in fact solve the issue.

If still no solution, check that there is still enough space on your system partition, which holds Windows. Lack of memory can apparently cause stop errors. Check also that your computer is virus free, as some particularly nasty viruses can contaminate the boot master and the boot area.

One other cause could be loose or not properly installed components. You will need to check that everything is correctly installed and may have to reseat components, and then complete another BSOD check. Next performing diagnostics on all testable hardware will eradicate some hardware causes or even find the root cause. If your system fails the test, the hardware or memory may need replacing.

If the previous test has no fruitful results, start your computer with the minimum system running requirements. If no stop error screen appears, it’s likely to be one of the other programs.

Troubleshooting can be a lengthy process and can take awhile to solve what may be a small problem. Troubleshooting is a vital part of I.T training in I.T technician certifications, such as the A+ certification.

If interested in starting a career in I.T, why not have a look at the training courses, which are available from a variety of computer based training specialists, including www.cvision.co.uk

Question by HiSee: How do your resolve a common Windows Vista Basic starting issue?
More than half of the time when I start up my laptop, I get this stupid error and have to restart (sometimes a few times) for the system to boot up correctly. Upon starting the system up, I get this msg:

You are about to be logged off

!
Windows must now restart because the DCOM Server Process Launcher service terminated unexpectedly

It restarts and then will work. But sometimes I have to go through this 3-4 times = annoying.

OR is this just another known Vista Home Basic issue being debugged by the MS gurus?
It was preinstalled with the Dell laptop and I had to take out a lot of junk already which helped considerably.
