Question by Rationalist Dee: Where does the name “Windows 7″ come from?
Here’s how I see the history of Windows:

Windows 3.1 (Windows 3)
Windows 95 (Windows 4)
Windows 98 (Windows 5)
Windows ME (Windows 6)
Windows XP (Windows 7)
Windows Vista (Windows 8)
Windows 7 (Windows 9)
.
Jason B: How is it obvious, when I count Windows 7 as the ninth system?
.
Carlos: Please give me a history of Windows releases where Windows 7 is the seventh system released.

Cause Windows 7 is the 7th operating system they have released. Pretty obvious.

Your rationale makes no sense. You have 7 names right there. 7! Just cause you can’t count doesn’t make 9. You forgot 1 and 2 come before 3.

You are over thinking this too much. Microsoft has even stated why they call it Windows 7. Because it is the 7th OS they have made. Windows 3.1 would be Windows 1, not Windows 3.

1. Windows 3.1 (Windows 3)
2. Windows 95 (Windows 4)
3. Windows 98 (Windows 5)
4. Windows ME (Windows 6)
5. Windows XP (Windows 7)
6. Windows Vista (Windows 8)
7(SEE! 7!). Windows 7 (Windows 9)

Thanks to the other answerers for clearing it up history wise.
