With names like XP and Vista I feel its a step in the right direction.
Plus, everyone instantly knows what you’re talking about when you say windows 7.

Because, XP was version 5 and Vista is version 6
But the fact is windows 7 is actually version 6.1 to limit program incompatibility issues

Its the seventh release of windows
1.0: Windows 1.0
2.0: Windows 2.0
3.0: Windows 3.0
3.1: Windows NT
4.0: Windows 95, 98, 98SE, ME
5.0: Windows 2000
5.1: Windows XP
6.0: Windows Vista
7.0: Windows 7
there are actually 3 more versions of windows, 2003 server, home server and 2008 server,
so saying its the 7nth version of windows is not true – as win 7 was released in 2009,
and its also nt6.1 not nt7
even by adding the server editions, that still gives less than half of the actual systems released,
and then there is windows ce
but, people will always find a way to justify why it was called 7 (the 7nth major release, the 7nth in the nt line, etc),
even microsoft have their own way (as an example, win95 was codenamed windows 4)
just a note but 7 was codenamed blackcomb first, then codenamed vienna then in 2007 it was re-named again as codename windows 7 and was first released in january 2008 to a selection of microsoft partners
