The Sarcoma Alliance launched a new website section today, featuring an article on nutrition by Jessica Iannotta, chief clinical officer of Meals to Heal.

“A well-balanced diet can give you the nutrients needed to fight off infections, and the fuel to repair damage done to healthy cells during treatment. Healthy eating also can reduce the amount and severity of treatment side effects,” says Iannotta, a registered dietitian and certified specialist in oncology nutrition. “The proper balance of proteins, carbohydrates and healthy fats helps prevent swings in blood sugar, hormones and energy levels. It can also help you to feel less fatigued, with a more positive mood.”

Meals to Heal is a New York company that FedExes fresh and healthy meals to the doorsteps of cancer patients, she says. The meals are designed to meet the nutritional needs and tastes of each patient.

“All of our registered dietitians have experience working with sarcoma patients,” she says.

Sarcoma arises in connective tissue, including bone, muscle, nerve and fat tissue. It occurs in people of all ages, from birth on up. The Sarcoma Alliance, a national nonprofit based in Mill Valley, Calif., provides education, guidance and support to people affected by this rare cancer.

Board member Suzie Siegel of Tampa says she sought the help of Meals to Heal because cancer patients get so much misinformation on diet.

“What you eat can increase your risk of getting certain cancers. But that’s not true for sarcoma, as far as we know,” says Siegel, a 10-year survivor of leiomyosarcoma. “There is no scientific evidence linking diet to sarcoma, nor is there any evidence that diet alone can cure sarcoma. But I agree with Jessica — a healthy diet can help in many ways.”

The Meals to Heal website recommends the Mediterranean diet, which is generally rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, beans, nuts, legumes, seeds, herbs and spices.

Many cancer centers have registered dietitians who can ease patients into a healthier but still delicious diet, Siegel says.

“Dietitians can recommend foods, beverages, meal plans and supplements to improve your nutrition before, during and after cancer treatment,” Iannotta says. “They can tailor this information to your individual needs, treatments and side effects.”

“Do your best, but don’t feel guilty or get stressed out if you eat a Big Mac,” Siegel adds. “You need to maintain a healthy weight, not waste away because you’re afraid to eat ‘bad food.’ “

“If you’re in the hospital, and your diet is not restricted, ask about different menus. If nothing looks good, ask if the kitchen can make something special for you. If your doctor allows it, you also can eat food brought from home or you can have a restaurant deliver.”

Iannotta also offers these tips:

– Eat small meals and snacks frequently throughout the day.

– Get information from sources that rely on sound, scientific evidence.

– Avoid miracle cures and unknown dietary supplements, most of which do not have evidence to support their use or benefit during or after cancer treatment. If something sounds too good to be true, chances are it is.

The Authentic Training Company, experts in retail and sales training, recently provided their take on Apples training along with tips on how to create the perfect sales package. One of the retail sales techniques Biddle claims Apple teaches its salespeople is the ‘Feel, Felt, Found’ approach for overcoming customer resistance. He provides an extract of the technique in use from the Genius Training Student Workbook: “Customer: This Mac is just too expensive. Genius: I can see how you’d feel this way. I felt the price was a little high, but I found its real value because of all the built-in software capabilities.”

Another technique Biddle refers to is the use of neutral language to describe problems and quotes the following examples of words to avoid from Apple’s student workbook a computer stops responding, it doesnt crash; there is a situation as opposed to it has a bug. The differences are subtle, but subconsciously significant. Bug and crash are emotive words, while stops responding and situation are less so. According to Biddle, Apples training also focuses on understanding emotion portrayed through nonverbal gestures, such boredom, openness, suspicion and so on.

Authentic Training company founder Melissa Davies, who has read Biddles synopsis of Apple’s retail sales training says – using empathy to overcome customer resistance through feel, felt and found is nothing new and should be standard in all selling programs. The use of language to influence customer emotions and perceptions, and reading body language to identify buying signals are also well established selling techniques, made popular through the field of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP).

According to Biddles description of Apple’s training program, where it does seem to differ from other mainstream selling programs is in its focus on relationship selling as opposed to hard selling. If a sales person can establish a relationship first, their focus is on educating and advising which is so much more effective than hard sales techniques. Apple employees are more technology consultants than sales people, and so customers respect them and feel more comfortable buying from them. Theyre getting advice, not a sales pitch.

On the downside, it does appear according to Biddles synopsis, that the program is somewhat prescriptive with very clear rules for customer engagement – the dos and donts. But selling is not a science, its a human interaction. Company founder Melissa Davies says – The danger in making training programs this prescriptive is that sales people focus more on the process theyve been taught to follow, as opposed to understanding and connecting with the customer. Theyre too busy mentally ticking off the rules of selling in their head to form a real connection with the person in front of them. Theyre not tuning into the energy of the customer, theyre not adapting to them they’re play acting to them. But top sellers operate at a higher level of emotional intelligence than this. Their approach is fluid, not prescriptive. Their focus is on making a connection, not following a process and in doing so theyre authentic, and authentic selling is successful selling.

Overall, there doesnt appear to be anything secret’, new or ‘genius’ in Apple’s training, but certainly the focus on consultative selling, as opposed to hard-selling, is a modern approach that customers respond better to.

REMI’s Mr. Nergarden issued his statement on the record-breaking low interest rates on fixed-rate mortgages announced by Freddie Mac last week, saying that it would help home buyers as low rates make homes much more affordable.

The Freddie Mac Primary Mortgage Market Survey, a weekly mortgage report issued by Freddie Mac, showed last week that interest rates on both 30-year and 15-year mortgages had fallen to an all-time low for the week of October 4. The 30-year fixed mortgage rate dropped to 3.36 percent from 3.4 percent the previous week, and from 3.94 percent a year ago. Meanwhile, 15-year fixed-rate mortgages averaged 2.69 percent, which showed a weekly drop from 2.73 percent and a yearly drop of 3.26 percent. Buyers of real estate advertising have enjoyed low interest rates for the last few years as the housing sector recovers from the crisis of 2008, but this drop in interest rates is unprecedented.

For the first time since 2009, in fact, 15-year fixed-rate mortgages are selling at a lower interest rate than 5-year adjustable-rate mortgages. Beach front vacation rentals have historically been financed by either fixed-rate mortgages, in which the interest rate stays constant for the life of the mortgage; or adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMs), in which the interest rate can change based on the credit market or other criteria, usually determined by the lender. While rates for fixed-rate mortgages are on a sharp decline, the rates for adjustable-rate mortgages are rising slightly. Last weeks numbers showed interest rates at 2.72 percent for 5-year ARMs, and 2.57 percent for 1-year ARMs. While this represents a small weekly decrease for 1-year ARMs (down from 2.6 percent), it also shows a marginal increase for 5-year ARMs from 2.71. However, both types of ARM are down considerably from last year, when interest rates were averaging 2.95 percent.

While there are reasons for concern in this news, including indicators of slowing economic growth and low home sales, prospective home buyers can, for now, enjoy historically low rates to finance the purchase of their own homes.

Tobias Nergarden released a statement following the publication of last weeks Freddie Mac Primary Mortgage Market Survey. The weekly-administered survey showed record-low interest rates for the second straight week on fixed-rate mortgages, both 15-year and 30-year. Adjustable-rate mortgages also saw a decline in interest rates from last year.
