Question by annaw: Can I use VMware to set up a LAN of virtual machines on my laptop?
I want to try out some penetration testing tactics. Unfortunately, I’m limited as to the number of computers I can use. Can I set up a LAN of virtual machines on my laptop? How would I do that?

Google has been unhelpful. :(

Thanks everyone!

As far as I know, you get the option of configuring your virtual machines with a virtual LAN adapter that you could use to communicate between virtual machines. You can also do this with Microsoft Virtual PC, or Microsoft Virtual Server.

How exactly do I run VMware Fusion?

Question by erickestrada4848: How exactly do I run VMware Fusion?
So I just got this neat app that let’s you run Windows on Mac.

I am interested in installing Windows XP. But when I make a virtual machine, it says I need an operation system disk? What exactly is this?

Also, there is disk image file and existing virtual disk options. Is there a way to do this without a disk?

Best answer:

Answer by jf
You install VMWare Fusion. You then use Fusion to install Microsoft Windows onto the laptop. Then in the future you can run Windows. So you need a legit copy of Fusion and a legit copy of Windows.

You can’t do the install using a disk image or anything of the sorts. Fusion requires an actual disk.

You should hit up their web site or their help files for a good walk through of the installation process. That would be a lot better and more helpful than trying to go off a short handed explanation on the forum here.

Question by Hello11: What do you think of the recent IPO filing of VMware?
Im looking at buying into this company. Any way I can buy the IPO? Anyhow, they are growing like the top growth stocks of its industry. Thoughts?

Best answer:

Answer by imisidro
I’m looking forward to it and have been checking with my broker as to how to buy into its IPO. Fortune Magazine is even calling it as

“The next big Silicon Valley IPO”

http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune_archive/2007/06/11/100060833/index.htm

As to how to participate in the IPO, check with your brokerage account on the eligibility requirements. I use Fidelity Investments and you can buy into IPOs if you :

= are a brokerage customer with a minimum of $ 500,000.
= Auction OpenIPOs and Secondary offerings made available through Fidelity are reserved for brokerage customers with a minimum of $ 100,000 in certain assets held at Fidelity.
= customers who have placed 36 or more stock, fixed income, or option trades in a rolling 12-month period are eligible for either traditional or auction based offerings.

Question by ccorde01: Can I run a VMWare virtual machine at home?
I have VMWare in my office and want to run a virtual machine that I can connect to via my cable modem at home. Is the network bandwidth over cable modem good enough to do this?

It depends on what you are doing. If you are playing a game or something that repaints the screen often no. But things like general office applications should be fine.

Also see if you can use the remote desktop program or VNC as other options.

Question by xrobsteelex: I want to install a fake audio driver on a vmware virtual machine, where can I find one?
I’m looking to simulate playing mp3′s on windows media player within a virutal machine. Since the vitual machines have no audio driver and windows media player wont play music without an audio driver…. how do I do this ?>

Best answer:

Answer by mr. c
you don’t need a fake driver in vmware;
vmware has build in drivers for almost all hardware that you might reasonably need in a virtual machine (3D graphics being a painful exception). as you seem to have already noticed, the native driver for the sound card doesn’t work because the hardware IS VIRTUALIZED (yes, that’s what a virtual machine is all about >:)
what you have to do is tell WMWare (player, workstation, server ?) which (audio) device from your computer it should use in the virtual machine; after restarting the vm, windows hardware clown will discover it and assign it the vmware virtual audio driver.

Question by supercheapcamera: How to connect two VMware workstations together?
PC1 has 4 GB ram running windows 2003, PC2 has 8Gb ram running Windows 2003. both have lan card installed with 1 slot free. A site/url would be helpful.

Best answer:

Answer by Arie
Just like you would connect to physical computers together. Make sure that both virtual machines receive their own IP address on your network and that they do not use a kind of private network between them and the host. Look into the settings of the virtual machine, you will see it there where you configure the network adapter for the virtual machine. Each virtual machine needs to receive its own IP address and not use the hosts IP address or some kind of loopback network adapter.
